All Aboard the New Golden Age of Train Travel

Luxury rail travel is the future of conscious exploration.

La Dolce Vita Orient Express, the first Italian-made luxury train, makes its much-anticipated debut with a bold ambition: to reinvent the very essence of travel in motion. There is a certain poetry to train travel—an unhurried elegance, a rhythm that lulls you into the romance of the journey itself. As the world turns toward more sustainable ways to explore, the great railways of the past and the high-speed marvels of the future are converging to redefine luxury travel. From the restored grandeur of the Orient Express to the sleek velocity of China’s bullet trains, the golden age of rail is not behind us—it is ahead.

For those who believe that travel is as much about the voyage as the destination, the resurgence of luxury train experiences is a revelation. The Orient Express, long synonymous with refinement and intrigue, is once again gracing Europe’s landscapes with its sumptuous Art Deco carriages. Reimagined by the Accor Group, the train will begin a new chapter in 2025, offering itineraries that blend Old World opulence with modern-day indulgence. Gleaming lacquered wood, Lalique glass panels, and plush velvet upholstery invite guests into an atmosphere where time slows, and elegance reigns.

Belmond, too, continues to define railway splendor with its Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, an unrivaled experience where white-gloved waiters serve lobster soufflé on bone china, and the passing countryside feels like an Impressionist painting in motion. Across the Atlantic, the Rocky Mountaineer and Canada’s Royal Canadian Pacific offer immersive, slow-travel experiences where panoramic glass-domed carriages frame nature’s majesty in its purest form. These journeys remind us that true luxury lies not in speed, but in presence.

While the romance of vintage train travel endures, the future of rail is being shaped by another kind of innovation—one that prioritizes speed, efficiency, and sustainability. Nowhere is this more evident than in China, home to the most advanced high-speed rail network in the world. The country’s bullet trains, operated by China Railway High-speed (CRH), glide at speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph), linking megacities with seamless precision. The Beijing-Shanghai route, covering over 800 miles in just four and a half hours, has redefined what is possible in rail travel.

Japan, long a pioneer in the field, continues to push the limits with its Shinkansen network, including the forthcoming maglev trains, which will levitate above tracks using superconducting magnets, reaching speeds of 500 km/h (310 mph). Meanwhile, Europe is investing in high-speed connectivity, with France’s TGV, Spain’s AVE, and Italy’s Frecciarossa linking major cities in hours—offering a climate-conscious alternative to short-haul flights.

The rise of luxury train travel is not just about aesthetics; it is also about sustainability. Rail travel produces significantly lower carbon emissions than air travel, making it an increasingly attractive option for eco-conscious travelers. The aviation industry accounts for nearly 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, while high-speed trains are powered by electricity, often sourced from renewable energy.

European initiatives like “flygskam” (flight shame) are encouraging a shift towards rail, while sleeper trains—such as Austria’s Nightjet and France’s revival of overnight routes—are making train travel more accessible and glamorous. In the U.S., renewed interest in Amtrak and proposed high-speed rail projects in California and Texas signal a growing appetite for rail as a viable alternative to air travel.

The interiors of La Dolce Vita Orient Express, by Milan’s Dimorestudio, are a reverent salute to Italian design's golden age: geometric echoes of Gio Ponti, the sensual modernism of Gae Aulenti, whispers of Osvaldo Borsani. True luxury is no longer defined solely by excess, but by experience. The new era of train travel offers something that commercial air travel cannot—spacious lounges, private suites, fine dining, and a deep connection to the landscapes that unfurl beyond the window. It is a slower, more intentional way to travel, where the journey itself is the destination.

Whether aboard a gilded carriage reminiscent of the 1920s or a whisper-quiet bullet train slicing through the countryside, train travel is shaping the future of sustainable luxury. It offers a rare indulgence: the freedom to be present, to embrace the art of the journey, and to rediscover the world, one track at a time.
