Celebrated in movies, TV shows, and novels, The Upper East Side has long been a storied crown jewel of New York, exuding glamour, grandiose architecture, and some of the city's most important landmarks. Nestled among classic townhouses and tree-lined streets, The Carlyle—sitting on Madison Avenue and 76th Street—stands tall as one of the most sophisticated hotels in the city. In the decades since its opening in 1930, it's become a legendary destination, attracting sophisticated travelers looking for a quintessential New York experience.

When winter descends on Manhattan, The Carlyle transforms into something out of a Christmas film, full of charming decor, the perfect seasonal playlist, and special holiday menus throughout its restaurants. Down in Bemelmans Bar, Luis Serrano, who has been the head bartender for over 30 years, shares a glimpse of what it's like to visit during the holidays. "History has been made in this bar and you really feel that when you walk through our doors," he shares. According to Serrano, cocktails are all about balance, so, when it comes to winter cocktails, highlighting ingredients that evoke a cozy and celebratory nature is key. "We have a seasonal cocktail called The Winter White House, which pays homage to the presidential visits The Carlyle has had throughout its history. It's made with whiskey, caffe amaro, coconut milk, maple syrup, and bitters. It's very warm and comforting, the perfect drink to enjoy during the chillier months."

The managing director of Bemelmans Bar, Marlene Poynder, has the task of converting the hotel into a festive haven year after year. "In order to move forward, The Carlyle has always looked towards the past for inspiration," she says. "It's important to bring our grand hotel into its next chapter, but we will do so by building off of the foundation that has been serving us well for 94 years." The hotel leans into classic New York City nostalgia by inviting live carolers to sing in the lobby, adorning the staircases and corners with holiday-inspired bouquets with the help of Winston Flowers, and of course, their festive menus. "Our executive chef, Moosah Reaume, has taken the helm of The Carlyle's culinary team and is debuting some incredible dishes," Poynder says. "His five-course dinners feature dynamic recipes such as a roasted pumpkin risotto with mint chimichurri and spiced pumpkin seeds, as well as venison served with parsnip, Swiss chard and huckleberry jus. Of course, guests can also enjoy caviar and champagne on arrival in true Carlyle fashion."

At the heart of The Carlyle's magic lies the most important component to make the charming establishment come together, and that is their staff. "They welcome our guests with open arms and truly make them feel like a part of the Carlyle family," Poynder shares. "Visitors come back to see their favorite bellman, or to pay a visit to their favorite Bemelmans bartender that always remembers their go-to cocktail." With its warm, intimate atmosphere and attentive service, The Carlyle feels less like checking into a hotel and more like returning to the home of a dear friend, especially during the holidays.
