Books tell stories, but they also hold the stories of the forests from which they came. In an era where sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity, we’ve taken a conscious step towards environmental responsibility. Since 2019, Assouline has partnered with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organization dedicated to global reforestation, to plant trees in regions where they’re needed most. As we celebrate Earth Month, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the impact of this initiative and the deeper connection between literature, sustainability, and the future of our planet.

Assouline’s collaboration with One Tree Planted is rooted in a shared mission: to restore biodiversity, combat deforestation, and create a more sustainable publishing industry. With over 300,000 trees planted worldwide through this initiative, the impact extends far beyond the bookshelves. These trees contribute to restoring ecosystems, supporting wildlife, and mitigating climate change.

"When companies with strong cultural influence like Assouline prioritize sustainability, they create a ripple effect, setting the tone and encouraging both consumers and industry peers to support nature-positive initiatives," says One Tree Planted. "Collaborations like this one bring visibility to reforestation efforts and engage a wider audience than we can reach alone."

Reforestation efforts have been focused on regions with urgent environmental needs, including Australia, where bushfires ravaged landscapes; Brazil’s Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, where native trees are crucial to preserving one of the world’s most important ecosystems; and the northeastern United States, where restoring native forests helps protect biodiversity and maintain ecological balance. Recent efforts have also expanded to Canada’s British Columbia, where extreme wildfires have devastated tree cover at an alarming rate.

"We are all too familiar with images of fiery skies and stories of destruction—they are a call to action," says One Tree Planted.

One Tree Planted takes a holistic approach to reforestation, recognizing that ecosystems, people, agriculture, and biodiversity are deeply interconnected. "We plant the right trees, in the right place, at the right time," it said. "Beyond tree planting, our work contributes to socio-economic development, clean water access, healthy soil, and habitat restoration for endangered species."

Beyond planting trees, Assouline envisions a future where the materials used in book production contribute to a regenerative cycle. By supporting reforestation projects, the company is taking steps toward a long-term goal: to one day source paper from the very forests it helps restore.

Books, after all, are more than just objects—they are vessels of culture, history, and creativity. "Culture and nature are inseparable," says One Tree Planted. "Nature is the original source of beauty and symbolism, inspiring art, design, architecture, food, and fashion. And a culture that values nature is one that embraces depth, resilience, and the kind of beauty that lasts."

Earth Month serves as a reminder that individual actions, when combined, create powerful movements. Assouline’s initiative with One Tree Planted is an invitation for readers, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts to take part in a collective effort to nurture our world. With each book purchased, there is an opportunity to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future—one where every page turned is a step toward regeneration.
